Wilbern Barnie Patterson

August 20, 1929 – May 1, 2019

Wilbern Barnie Patterson, 89, passed from this life, Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

A Graveside Service with full Military honors will be Monday, May 6, at 10 am at the Bryan City Cemetery in Bryan. Visitation will be Sunday, May 5, 2-4 pm at Trevino Funeral Home of Bryan.

Wilbern was born August 20, 1929 in Caldwell, Texas to Tom Parker & Winne (Nichols) Patterson.    He was the oldest of six and started working at the age of 12 to help support his family.   Wilbern was active in the Boys Scout troop #364 and served as a Scout Master.  He lacked 2 merit badges achieving Eagle Scout, which is the highest honor.

He joined the Army at age 19 and later transferred to the Air Force where he served 24 years and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant in June of 1972.  He served honorably as a “Cryptographer” or high-security Communications specialist.  He completed 2 one year tours in Thule, Greenland and 3 at Elmendorf Air force Base in Alaska and received many outstanding service awards.

Wilbern attended Bryan Schools and graduated from the University of Alaska in 1971 with a B.A degree in Education and was 3 hours short of another degree in psychology.  He also taught ROTC and History at Bryan High School.

Wilbern served as an Elder in the Lord’s church and enjoyed Preaching and teaching when given the opportunity.  He attended many Bible workshops, along with performing Weddings and Funerals for friends or family. He served as a volunteer Chaplain for St. Joseph’s Hospital and enjoyed visiting with those who were sick or in need.  He was a member at the Brazos Valley Church of Christ in College Station.

He enjoyed raising cattle, pigs, and chickens, bailing and hauling hay and even fishing when he had time.  He also enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and the Houston Rockets.  Of course, if you’re going to watch sports you need plenty of pizza. He also liked playing pinochle and dominos.

He is survived by his wife Mary Beth Patterson, a wonderful wife, mother, and more importantly a Godly Woman for 67 years.  They were married on December 24, 1951.

He is survived by his children, Pam and husband Gene Beller, Tom and wife Cindy Patterson of Oklahoma, Wilbern David Patterson (deceased), Janice Patterson, Sherry and husband Ben Smith, and Greg & wife Anda Patterson of Bryan.

They have 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter.

Let me share my Dad’s faith with you; He believed the Bible describes the clear message of Salvation that Jesus and His disciples taught to those who: Hear – Rom. 10: 13-17, Believe in Jesus – Heb. 11:6, Repent of your sins – Luke 13: 3-5; Acts 17: 30-31, Confess Jesus name – Matt. 10: 32-33, Arise and be Immersed and wash away your sins – Acts 2: 38; Acts 22: 16, Live Faithfully and receive the crown of life – Rev. 2: 10.

The Bible reminds us, “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person”.  (Eccl. 12:13)
